fellow twitter fam 4eva_lex & i came up with twoddlers, an endearing moniker for twitter fam whose dob is after nightline’s profile of twitter on 2.25.09. welcome all twoddlers…pay attention to etiquette and we hope you all have a long, successful twitter life
my twitter d.o.b. is october 2007. i was as intimidated with the blank blue screen as anyone that first night i signed up. abandoned it after 2 or 3 days feeling overwhelemed when i saw how many followers people had. i had no clue of who to follow or how to go about finding them.
but i returned about 2 months later, using twitter as an echo chamber for my thoughts. eventually, by perusing the public timeline, i found more and more interesting people to follow, who would in turn reply to and follow me, which led to a growing twitter family that numbers nearly 1600 now. twitter encouraged me to start this blog here and after one year, i couldn’t have predicted the success i’d have
so thank you, twitter & all of you who have cared enough about my random thoughts to follow and stay with me on this here blog for one year. happy one year anniversary family & friends! and welcome twoddlers of all persuasions to twitter!
record television ratings were confirmed today for nbc’s 2008 summer olympic coverage. The Beijing games have averaged over 30 million viewers over its first three days, according to Nielsen Media Research. This is a significant increase over the Olympic Games four years ago and nearly triple the audience the networks have attracted with summer programming so far.
The record viewership has no doubt been fueled by US swimmer Michael Phelps’ incredible run at Olympic History. The 23 year old swimming phenom has already won 5 gold medals in these Olympic Games to add the 6 he’d won in 2004. At 11 gold medals, Phelps is the athlete with the most in Olympic history. He’s got a chance to increase his lead in 3 more events before the games conclude next week.
Phelps aside, the Olympic Games this year are undergoing a sort of renaissance. The culture has always rallied around sporting events and the Olympic Games are the world’s best competing against each other. So high ratings shouldn’t be a surprise, should they?
But television viewing habits have also been dramatically altered from Olympic Games and years past. Many decry the dearth of quality summer programming options the networks have made available over the past few years. Consequently, there has been a massive shift to the internet as THE entertainment and news medium since the 2004 games aired. And it is, in fact, the collective experience sharing so well-fostered by the internet that has ignited the increase in television viewers this year.
The extravagant opening ceremony last Friday was dramatically chronicled on the popular microblogging site twitter. the broadcast was the week’s (and summer’s) highest-rated program since the American Idol finale back in May. The buzz grew on twitter all weekend as messages, or tweets referencing the Olympic Competitions dominated the twitterverse. this online interest in the olympics has only grown stronger over the first 3 days of this week, as all internet social networks are compelled to share in amazement while watching mesmerized by Michael Phelps’ record setting Olympic drive.
The Summer Olympics have returned at the perfect opportunity to unite online and real world communities around the beginning of what will be a bonanza of high-profile events scheduled for the end of summer. The ceremonies continue throughout the week and this weekend before concluding next Friday. So if you’re not tuning in, or connecting with people who are, get with it!
twitter’s popularity has skyrocketed this year. with the avalanche of twits referencing the enormously popular 2008 Summer Olympics, the micro-blogging site has become THE destination for real-time sharing of high-profile events.
