marvin sapp: the best in me/here i am 2010

gospel artist marvin sapp is at the top of the billboard charts as his just released cd ‘here i am’ becomes the highest charting gospel cd ever.

sapp is no stranger to the charts, he’s been releasing hit albums since 1995. the new single, “the best in me” is already a #1 hit preparing to challenge his breakthrough single ‘never would have made it’. this guy has an amazing voice and pours his heart out in his songs. marvin sapp has a trifecta of great cd’s: diary of a psalmist, thirsty & this one, here i am.

i’m a fan of great voices so even as an agnostic i am touched by the passion in sapp’s voice & music. in fact, marvin sapp is speaking to me through his song “miracle” right about now. omg. where has this been hiding? marvin sapp is the man.

usher: raymond v. raymond 2010

i am pleasantly surprised at what a great cd this is from usher. i had all but written him off after that catastrophic performance at the 2010 nba all star game. but raymond v. raymond finally arrives as a solid, mature, well produced album.

jimmy jam and terry lewis show that they still have a hit-making formula, producing 4 of raymond v. raymond‘s best tracks, including the propulsive opening cut, ‘monstar.’ still, one of the more interesting songs on the new cd samples soft rock classic ‘into the night.’ ‘making love (into the night)’ is a mid-tempo hybrid love song/club song. very catchy.

i’ve been so critical of usher lately that ne-yo beat him out for top male r&b artist of the decade. the new pecking order starts behind trey songz. what a year he’s had. with this exceptional new cd, usher has overtaken ne-yo for runner-up. still ne-yo has a film project & album due this summer that’s sure to be a hit. unfortunately, chris brown’s escalating woes have seen him tumble into 5th place, after the-dream, with robin thicke quickly gaining.

yep. so i’ve spent the weekend welcoming usher back to the head of the class. lol how productive…what a dark, windy & wet weekend it’s been here in nyc.

usher’s cd raymond v. raymond becomes widely available 3.30.10.

keyshia cole & christina milian: new motherhood

wow two of the most beautiful r&b singers just became mothers: christina milian & the-dream welcomed violet on friday 2.26.10 while keyshia cole and nba player daniel gibson became parents of daniel jr. last night, 3.2.10.

i know both the-dream & dude are basking in the afterglow of becoming fathers. it’s an amazing feeling. and you both got to see absolutely beautiful women carrying your child. i hope you loved her like a verb…lol it’s a challenge action-verb loving a pregnant woman sometimes but absolutely amazing to see your child growing within her.

congrats to both sets of parents! prepare to be transformed! lol. most of all i send both couples enough patience & love to stay together! stay married :)   the first year together with a new baby is a challenge. remember why you fell in love and keep thinking about how that love created your child together. together. so stay together. let’s make sure these two couples stay together folks….give them all the support they need :)

all but forgotten: tevin campbell 1990-1996

damn not much luv out there for tevin campbell. geez. dude had 2 very successful albums in the early 90s…and then you all abandoned him. his debut album, t.e.v.i.n. was released near his 15th birthday in november 1991 and spawned 5 hit singles, spread out over the next two years: “tell me what you want me to do” in 91, “goodbye” & “alone with you” in ’92 and even into 1993: “confused” & “look what we’d have.” that’s pretty damn exceptional.

tevin campbell returned in fall ’93 with an even more successful sophomore cd, “i’m ready.” it generated 4 huge hits: “can we talk”, “i’m ready” & “always in my heart” in collaboration with laface. prince’s sensual “shhh” released as an album cut in late ’93 ensured that “i’m ready” would be tevin campbell’s most successful cd & tevin campbell spent all of ’94 near the top of the charts.

but then…his third album in 1996, “back to the world”…the cd cover image…the braids. dayum. career ender there. the scandal of his arrest in a men’s restroom in ’99 didn’t even generate enough interest in his final self-titled album that same year. no matter; before usher, we had tevin campbell’s teenage swagger and it wasn’t bad.
